Storyline/Plot
The Voting Rights Act of 1965 marked the start of a new, significant chapter in the Civil Rights Movement rather than its conclusion. Lowndes County, Alabama, a rural, impoverished community with a violent history of racist terrorism, was the perfect place to represent this next war. Laws were only paper without teeth in a town with an 80% Black population but no Black voters. This is a tale of action rather than hope. LOWNDES COUNTY AND THE ROAD TO BLACK POWER chronicles the local movement and young organizers of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) who battled for Black Power in Lowndes County, not merely for the right to vote, through first-person narratives and scathing archival film.
